Susan DeVenny is the Executive Director of South Carolina First Steps to School Readiness, South Carolina’s early childhood agency. In addition to supporting the work of local county partnerships across the state, First Steps is responsible for the state’s early intervention system (BabyNet) and community-based preschool (4k) programs through the Child Development and Education Pilot Program. Susan also serves as the director of the SC Early Childhood Advisory Council, whose members serve jointly as state trustees of First Steps.
Susan was elected in 2009 as Secretary for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, representing 90,000 early childhood professionals worldwide. She has served on the board of the United Way Association of South Carolina since 2004. Her public policy and volunteer work includes early childhood, school transition, parent engagement, reading and literacy development. Her professional background includes more than 25 years of leadership experience in both the public and private sectors.
Susan received her undergraduate degree from Furman University and her graduate degree from the University of Georgia. She and her husband, Alston, and their four children live in Lancaster, SC where they are active community volunteers.
