In 2011 South Carolina First Steps was named the lead agency for South Carolina
Parents as Teachers (PAT) Affiliate Programs.
South Carolina PAT served 3,136 children and 2,726 families in 2012 and is currently the largest home visiting model implemented in the state. As the state lead for PAT, SCFS provides technical assistance, training and support to each of the states’ 63 affiliate programs.
The Parents as Teachers National Evidence-based Home Visiting Model is designed to ensure young children are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Services to highly challenged families in SC are delivered by certified Parent Educators who emphasize parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting and family well-being.
"South Carolina is a great example of how home visitation can be done right to help families and children," said Parents as Teachers' CEO, Scott Hippert.
In 2013, 18 PAT home visitation programs in SC were chosen among 60 PAT affiliates across the United States to receive U.S. Department of Education funding.
